Ready on the Bench
“You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” Luke 12:40 (NIV).
On game day, a basketball team has key players that the coach and other players rely on. They are the starting five players. These athletes have practiced usually more than the other players. All week long, they have run the plays they will execute in the game to be certain of their success.
However, the most important players are the ones on the bench. How can one say that? They don’t start. They are most important because at any point, at any time, the coach may call them into the game and they must be ready. They have no idea when their time will come, but they have to be prepared at all times.
In short, you don’t know the specific hour that Jesus will come so you must be ready and prepared to receive Him. Just like the player on the bench, you must live a life that anticipates Jesus’ coming every single day. Prepare yourself by reading the Word of God and get understanding so that you know how to live according to His will. Spend time in the presence of God to build a real and personable relationship with Him. Allow the Holy Spirit to walk you through each and every day in the will of God and the wisdom of God so that whenever the Son of Man shows up, you are not left sitting on the bench.
